When we express gratitude and receive the same, our brain releases dopamine and serotonin, the two crucial neurotransmitters responsible for our emotions, and they make us feel 'good'. They enhance our mood immediately, making us feel happy from the inside. Gratitude can be a natural anti-depressant, when we take our time and not only ask what we are grateful for but actually practice gratitude on a daily basis.


In neuroscience research, Hebb's Law says that “neurons that fire together wire together.” The more you practice gratitude, the more you strengthen the brain's neural circuits for gratitude, making it easier to focus on feelings of gratitude.


Practicing gratitude shifts our attention to what is going right instead of looking for problems to solve. Once the neural pathways are forged, our brains are encouraged to focus on the constructive versus the destructive. The shift has one watering the flowers versus the weeds in our work and life.


Part of gratitude that many overlook are the occurrences we tend to dwell upon instead of seeing the silver lining. For example, perhaps you did not get the job you interviewed for and you placed all of your hope on it. Only to find later, that an even better opportunity was just around the corner for you! Point being, don't dwell! Have gratitude for the experience with knowing you are more than qualified, just timing may have played a part.


You have the power within! And giving thanks for the small and large in our life not only increases serotonin and dopamine, as does meditation, but also perpetually improves optimism and our perception of life for the better.
